Hagrid leads the first-years to Professor McGonagall, who directs them in a small room next to the Great Hall. Then they enter the Great Hall. There all first-years get divided by the Sorting Hat into the four houses.
As Harry Potter is called to put on the Sorting Hat, all students look at him. The Sorting Hat speculates if to put him into Gryffindor or Slytherin, but Harry doesn′t want to go to Slytherin and so he is appointed to the house of Gryffindor. His new friend Ron Weasley becomes also a Gryffindor.
After the sorting the banquet begins and everybody eats as much as they can. During the feast Harry and Ron get to know the Nearly Headless Nick who is the House ghost of Gryffindor.
After the feast Dumbledore explains that it is forbidden to go into the Forbidden Forrest and into the corridor on the third floor, which is a new rule.
Percy, the prefect of Gryffindor, guides his house into the common room of Gryffindor. Soon afterwards the boys and girls are in their separated dormitories and fall asleep.
