Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Chapter 17 - The Heir of Slytherin

Chapter 17 - The Heir of Slytherin

In a long, dimly lit chamber Harry sees Ginny lying on the floor in front of a large statue of Slytherin. He runs to her quickly. Tom Riddle is standing closely to them, he looks exactly like in the diary. Tom takes Harry′s wand, but Harry doesn′t notice. He tells Harry that he is a memory that has been kept in the magical diary. He says that he has Ginny in his grip and takes her energy of life. The weaker she gets, the more powerful he gets. He got Ginny to open the Chamber of Secrets and to set the basilisk off for Muggle-borns. Ginny had tried to escape and to destroy the diary, but for Toms luck Harry found the diary. Tom is more interested in Harry than in Ginny.
He tells Harry what has happened as the chamber had been opened before. He says that Prof. Dumbledore didn′t believe him at that time and that Tom Riddle became Lord Voldemort later on. Harry is shocked but even now he holds to Dumbledore, who is -in Harry′s eyes- the greatest sorcerer in the world. In this moment Fawkes comes into the chamber with the old Sorting Hat and Tom laughs and rushes the basilisk at him. Harry closes his eyes to prevent being killed by the view of the basilisk. The fight starts and Harry has only the hat and Fawkes for help. He gets the sword of Gryffindor from the hat and he is able to kill the basilisk with it.
However, a long, poisonous fang sinks deep into his arm and Harry lowers himself endangered to die. Tom laughs. But he did the calculation without Fawkes, whose tears can heal basilisk wounds. Harry uses the opportunity and stings the fang of the basilisk into the centre of the diary. The figure of Tom disappears while crying in pain. Harry settles and goes back with Ginny, who awakes. In the meantime Ron was able to break through the stone wall and with the help of Fawkes, they are able to escape through a pipe into the girls toilet and further to the office of Prof. McGonagall.
