Professor Lupin and the students try to get Professor Snape to back down off his revenge. When they are unsuccessful they try to disarm him, knocking him out in the process. Lupin and Sirius resume their explanation and finally force Peter to show himself in his true human form. Peter starts begging for mercy. He does not deny his deeds but merely puts them off to cowardice in the face of the Dark Lord. Peter Pettigrew is supposed to be handed over to the Dementors so that the innocence of Sirius can be proven. They all take their way back through the secret passage.
